In the early ’80s, I remember my sister bringing home LP of The Go-Go’s Beauty and the Beat to play on the new stereo she had in her room. At the time, I didn’t understand the huge significance of this first all-women group who wrote their own songs and played their own instruments; I just knew it was great, catchy, pop-punk music that I loved. Years later, when I saw the first production of Head over Heels, there was something about the combination of their music with a 16th-century romance that just worked for me.
