Description

There are few shows, and particularly fewer musicals, where I feel as direct of a connection to the character as I do as Robert in Company. Like Robert, I spent most of my early adult years single and surrounded by couples in very long-term relationships who constantly worried about me and gave me advice. I had this idealized version of what love would be like, but an unwillingness to make myself vulnerable. And like Robert’s finale of “Being Alive,” I had a moment where all of that shattered and I suddenly understood what it meant to be part of the world, rather than standing on the outside looking in.
