Description

Most people associate the role of Cornelius Hackl with either Charles Nelson Reilly (from the original Broadway) or Michael Crawford (from the movie), neither of which really interested me. But when the director approached me about making the character more like Anthony Perkins (from the movie of The Matchmaker, the Thornton Wilder play that Dolly is based on), suddenly it was a project I wanted to work on. Playing characters as buffoons rarely seems like the right choice to me, and with material as light as Jerry Herman I definitely appreciated the efforts made to keep the characters honest.
